SEASON SUMMARY

With the graduation of 1979-80 seniors and All Conference wrestlers Paul Candela, George Hastings, Dom Pensa & Steve Valyo, the expectations for the 1980-81 Baymen were not very high. Newsday predicted the Baymen to finish second in League 8 behind Easthampton and third in the League 7-8 Tournament behind Westhampton and Easthampton. The 1980-81 Baymen were led by returning starters and senior co-captains John Tobin and Doug Matz.

The Baymen started the season strong with six, 2nd place-winners and a second place team finish in the December 19th Hampton Bays Invitational Tournament. The Baymen followed with a 4th place team finish in the December 29th Sayville Holiday Tournament behind champions John Tobin (145 lbs) & sophomore, Sal Fava (91 lbs). The Baymen stubbed their toe in their 1st dual meet against an inferior Shoreham Wading River team, losing by a point, 33-32. Several key starters were out sick or hurt for this match and Coach Fitz had missed practice during the week due to the flu. A key moment of the season occurred the Monday following the loss. The team expected Coach Fitzgerald to be upset about the loss and to work them extra hard in Monday practice. He did the OPPOSITE! He entered the wrestling room later than usual, sat on the steps of the stage and said nothing. The only sound heard in the room was the intensity at which the team worked in practice all week resulting in a 32 - 19 win over a much deeper League 2, Brentwood Sonderling team. The momentum continued during the course of the dual meet season as the Baymen climbed the Suffolk County (Section XI) team rankings ending the dual meet season ranked seventh. This was the first time the program was ranked in the top ten of Suffolk County.

On January 30th the Baymen won convincingly over pre-season favorites Easthampton, 52-5. HB then competed in the early February, West Islip Tournament which included Suffolk County powerhouse teams Brentwood Ross, Harborfields and West Islip. The Baymen finished second to Brentwood Ross crowning 3 champions, Sal Fava (95 lbs), John Tobin (142 lbs) and Tony Villareale (215 lbs). In addition, Tobin was voted Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament by the coaches.

The Baymen ended the dual meet season with wins over rival Westhampton Beach and over Southampton clinching the League 8 Dual Meet Championship. Hampton Bays finished with a fine 10-4-1 dual meet record. The three other losses were to perennial top Suffolk County teams Bay Shore, Sachem and Connetquot. The tie being with League 2 power Smithtown East (Sachem was ranked 1st and Bay Shore 3rd, in the New York State Sportswriters post season poll).

Suffolk County restructured the former Conference tournaments back to League tournaments for the 1980-81 season. League 7 and League 8 were combined into one tournament. The Baymen ran away with the League 7-8 Tournament with 10 wrestlers in the finals, crowning 4 champions (Sal Fava, Doug Matz, Tom McSherry and John Tobin). Westhampton Beach finished a distant second with 174 points to Hampton Bays, 260.5 points.

The 1980-81 Hampton Bays wrestling team placed seventh in the 1981 Suffolk County (Section XI) Championships. It was the first time in their history the Baymen finished in the top ten in the counties. The Baymen had three County place-winners, John Tobin placed 3rd at 142 lbs losing 5-2 in the semi-finals to the eventual NY State champion, John Arceri (Ward Melville). Doug Matz placed 4th at 126 lbs, and Joe Villareale (Jr) placed 5th at 167 lbs wrapping up yet another successful season for the program. The future is very bright for the Baymen with ten returning starters for the 1981-82 season.
