SEASON SUMMARY
The 1981-82 team was young but experienced with six returning league place-winners. Leading the Baymen into the season were returning league champions junior's Sal Fava (91 lbs) and Tom McSherry (132 lbs). Returning league place-winners were senior's Ken Tobin (112), Charlie Nicholson (119), Joe Villareale (170) and junior Tony Villareale (180). The co-captains were Charlie Nicholson and Joe Villareale. The team was looking to repeat as league dual meet and league tournament champions. Hampton Bays was the pre-season favorite according to Newsday (11/29/1980), followed by Easthampton, Rocky Point, Miller Place Westhampton Beach, Mattituck, Greenport-Southold, Shoreham Wading River and Southampton.

The Baymen started the season very strong by winning the Hampton Bays Tournament with 226 1/2 points on December 19, 1980. William Floyd finished a distant 2nd with 156 1/2. In addition Sal Fava, Charlie Nicholson, Tom McSherry, Joe Villareale & Tony Villareale were the first Baymen to win a Hampton Bays Tournament title since the tournament began in 1978. Charlie Nicholson followed up with the only championship in the December 30th Sayville Holiday Tournament. The Baymen did not fare well in this tournament as a team finishing 5th.

On Friday, January 8, 1982 the Baymen commenced the dual meet season facing the very tough Sachem High School who finished 2nd in the Suffolk County (Section XI) Tournament in 1981. The Baymen fared well but lost a 40-18 decision. In the post match Hampton Chronicle interview Coach Fitzgerald stated "I'm not really disappointed with the loss, even though I thought we would do better, because they are a very tough team. This should make us see where we have to go, because it's not where we are that counts, but where we are going". The following day the Baymen bounced back against Miller Place. The wrestlers suffered another set back, this time against Suffolk County power-house, Connetquot. It was a tight match with the Baymen on the short end of the 24-19 score. The match was decided in the final match. The team rolled through 6 of their next 7 matches. Their only loss was to perennial Suffolk County power, Brentwood.

The team competed in the mid February West Islip Tournament and crowed four champions (Sal Fava, Charlie Nicholson, Tom McSherry and Tony Villareale). The team finished second. Tom McSherry won the Most Pins, Least Time Award. The Baymen also wrestled against the returning 1981 Suffolk County, Section XI Champion Bay Shore High School. The Baymen held their own but lost a close match, 26-21. The Baymen finished the dual meet season with a fine 11-4 record and again won the League 8 Dual Meet Championship.

The League 7-8 Tournament took place on February 26th & 27th and the Baymen, for the third straight year, won the team title. The Baymen tallied 225 points. Rocky Point took second, far behind with 132 1/2 points. Sal Fava, Charlie Nicholson, Tom McSherry, Joe Villareale and Tony Villareale won league championships. It was Tom McSherry's third straight title. The Baymen finished in 8th Place in the March 5th-6th Suffolk County, Section XI Tournament. This was the second straight top 10 county finish for the team. Charlie Nicholson finished his stellar senior year season placing 2nd in the county losing a hard fought match, 4-0, to Bill Starke of Sachem in the finals. Starke went on to win the NY State Championships. Tom McSherry and Joe Villareale both took 3rd Place in the county tournament. Joe Villareale became the Baymen's first two time Suffolk County place-winner having taking 5th the year before.
